Magic Lantern est en passe d’être porté sur EOS-M

Vous connaissez maintenant tous Magic Lantern, le célèbre patch pour boîtiers DSLR Canon. Et bien l’équipe de Magic Lantern vient de s’atteler au portage de son patch pour l’Hybride de la marque CANON : le EOS-M. Et la chose est en bonne voie puisque via le site officiel, l’équipe a annoncé avoir réussi à faire afficher sur l’écran de l’EOS-M le célèbre « Hello world », écran d’accueil de Magic Lantern. L’équipe a d’ailleurs dévoilé que la structure de l’EOS-M s’apparentait beaucoup à celle d’un 5d Mark III ce qui avait rendu l’entreprise moins compliquée qu’il n’y paraît.

Les limitations du CANON EOS-M sont, comme le rappelle le communiqué de Magic Lantern, ce qui l’empêche de véritablement décoller. Magic Lantern espère donc bien débrider le boîtier pour le transformer en une véritable bête de compétition, compacte, et de plus, pleinement compatible avec tous les objectifs de la marque Canon. Si la disponibilité du patch est prévue pour les semaines à venir, les fonctionnalités principales n’ont pas encore été dévoilées.

Rappelons au passage que le Canon EOS M est donc un appareil photo compact à objectifs interchangeables (alias hybride) qui embarque un capteur CMOS de 18Mpixels et le processeur DIGIC 5, et permet de filmer en Full-HD à 30, 25 et 24 images par secondes, toujours en MOV/H264. Il possède sa propre monture d’objectif EOS-M, mais est compatible avec l’ensemble des objectifs de la marque CANON par l’intermédiaire d’un adaptateur officiel.

With a little guesswork, we were lucky to notice that on the inside, the little EOS-M is very similar to the 5D Mark III. So, with a few tricks we were able to dump the firmware and print the familiar « Hello World » message – the proof that Magic Lantern will work on the EOS-M.

In his review, Roger Cicala said the EOS-M is « a firmware update and a price drop away from being a great camera« . We, the developers of ML, will try to address the first issue.

We like the EOS-M a lot, even if in our poll it came out near the bottom. With a few software tweaks, it can be a great small camera for timelapse and astronomy work, according to ubergizmo. The video side didn’t really impress us, but as a compact travel camera with DSLR image quality, it’s probably going to be hard to beat.
